Meg – Tough Love Tattoo Studio

Meg has been part of the team at Tough Love Tattoo Studio since January 2019, when she started her apprenticeship at the studio.

She had previously been an apprentice at King Arthur’s in Scarborough, where she has also put needle to skin but took a year out to have her son and spend as much time with him as possible in his first year. She is now back with an even stronger passion for her style and craft.

Meg has always wanted to be a part of the art world and found her calling in the form of tattoos. She studied art at A Level and finished top of the class with an A*. With this she was awarded an unconditional offer to Leeds College of Art where she completed her Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.

During her time here, Meg learned how to paint in a hyper realistic way and focussed on this heavily but after reflecting on her work decided that she wanted to use her own voice in her practice.

Meg has always been interested in Victorian etchings and the use of lines and dots to make objects look three dimensional, which is where her own unique style was founded and can be seen in her tattoos.

Artists like Salvador Dalí, Picasso, Chaim Soutine inspired her to find different ways to animate objects, with the use of colour and thick lines to add depth to the designs in a very stylised manner.

Meg has now built up her client base and has developed her artistic style. Working in mostly black and grey but also loves to add a splash of colour. She is drawn to bold linework, reminiscent of traditional tattoos, contrasted with dotwork shading and realistic elements to soften the look of the tattoos.

With this uniquely developed style, Meg won second place for her awesome, ‘Avant Garde’ tattoo, on our regular customer Bria, at the York International Tattoo Convention 2022. Meg is now looking forward to entering more competitions and conventions with Tough Love in the future!
